What the French Have Given Me

I don't have a serious problem with the French. I don't, for instance, insist on calling them Freedom Fries. I do, however, enjoy poking fun at their 20th century philosophers (i.e. Foucault, Deleuze, et al.).

I must be fair, though. The French have given me something that makes my life complete: good coffee. If you don't know about the french press then you need to.

It has nothing to do with journalism or wrestling moves. We're talking coffee - good coffee. The secret of the french press is that the coffee grounds are in direct contact with the water, no filter soaking up the delicious oils. The grounds are kept at the bottom by the ingenious wire meshing. Lavoisier and Pascal would be proud.

C'est magnifique!

Mr. Ellison was always extolling the French Press as well last year...you know, I don't think I've ever had FP coffee. I've had some unfortunate brews of of Folgers using the filter method (blech), and all the standard Starbucks stuff (alliteration. yeah.) ...

Oh, and Magister, you should really make up your mind about a userpic. All this jumping about is fit to addle my poor brains.

And don't forget--the French gave you Barzun. And Victor Hugo, who's pretty cool too. and things like noblesse oblige which I probably can't spell correctly but which makes the user sound intelligent. Well...sort of. ...

You really ought to have some FP coffee. It's a life altering experience or ought to be.

I think I'll keep the Samuel Johnson pic for a while. It matches Hansoniana quote and the general tone I'm aiming to achieve.

The French did give us Barzun. They also gave us that fun little French laugh with which we may mock them. C'est la vie!

I think they also gave us Bourbon (or at least the Bourbon dynasty).

yeah, I suppose if I wasn't too lazy to bother grinding the coffee and all that jazz, I might make myself some...but right now I'd rather go watch Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. You gotta love Jimmy Stewart.

...although I really should be working on my senior thesis books...
