Consolatio Juliana

My goddaughter, so it seems, is taking up philosophy. That's good. Philosophy is a great consolation for this life of ours in which there is little is to be enjoyed and much to be endured, as Doctor Johnson said.

I recommend Boethius's Consolation. Read it either in English or in Latin. Read it, though, people. Read it.

To which category of Johnson's distinction does your blog belong?

I like to think that there's at least a little to be enjoyed.

A little Chestertonian disagreement: "man is more himself, man is more manlike, when joy is the fundamental thing in him, and grief the superficial....Pessimism is at best an emotional half-holiday; joy is the uproarious labor by which all things live."
(~Orthodoxy. And there's a lot more where that came from.)
Actually, I just felt like posting Chesterton somewhere. And this was a good spot to do it.
Your blog is definitely a pocket of joy Magister. Where else would onions, Latin, minions, random pictures, toddlers, Joe's O's, philosophy and asparagus (asparagi?) come together?
And people, read Consolation. It's good.

Chesterton is welcome anytime, especially as an antidote to Johnsonian gloom. While I like the good Dr. Johnson, it's taken me some time to put him into perspective. Chesterton is a good backdrop.

Of course there is, darling. The love and encouragement I receive at home spills over into the blogosphere!
